What We Didnt Want To Happen

Was for violence to break out in any form before Lebanon secures the Presidential office. General Francois al Hajj is dead thanks to a roadside bomb and now things are shaky enough to through the entire country out of order. Al Hajj’s is not solely powerful enough to cause civil war by his death, not like Rafik Hariri but the assassination of a senior official who’s position is directly linked to the presidency is unsettling enough to bring all the crazies out of their homes.

People have trouble understanding the fragility of the Middle East sometimes. Lebanon especially is a country whose political structure demands chaos. The constitution requires a Maronite Christian president, a Sunni prime minister and a Shi’a speaker. Positions along religious lines go straight down to the military as well. The most powerful position in the country is represented by a small minority and I dont have to tell you how sensitive religious identities are in this region. Add all that to the fact that nearly every single spy agency in the world operates in Lebanon, all of Europe, the U.S., Israel, Russia and the whole Arab world, in a country of 3 million they might have more spies than civilians. Now consider that the different groups in this country have a very difficult time getting along and EVERYONE has guns in their home. A friend of mine has a couple AK-47’s, a M-16, some other assorted machine guns, 3 Desert Eagle’s and 2 rocket launchers…and his family are a bunch of well off bankers and business owners.

All we can do now is sit and wait to see what happens next. Bombs have a way of giving way to other bombs, hopefully this bomb doesnt give birth to more.
