Craziness is a Disease in Egypt
I like to consider myself somewhat of an accurate analyst but sometimes the context of Egypt politics and social peculiarities are too much for me to comprehend so I resort to sitting back and accepting it as one of those things that make the country what it is…an upside down mess.
The most recent mess is this insane so called “Fatwa” by the Egyptian Sheikh of Al Azhar, Mohammed Tantawy. He gave a speech Monday in front of an audience that included Hosni Mubarak, stating that “those who spread rumors” should recieve 80 lashes, in reference to the recent indictment of journalists.
Amin Howaidy put it best…
“Why didn’t we hear Tantawy’s opinion about torture and fraudulent elections and even when 1000 people drowned in 2005 on the Al Salam ferry? Why didn’t he speak? We don’t trust his opinions any more and his talk backfires on him because he is not honest”
I highly doubt that Egypt would institute such a punishment but for the Sheikh of Al Azhar to ask for it on behalf of the government is extraordinary. Before you know it Hosni Mubarak himself is going to demand Sharia in Egypt…wont that be the day it all falls apart!?
